CBC to Launch a Next Generation Digital Service In Hamilton

CBCContinuing the promise of its five-year strategic plan Everyone, Every Way, CBC has announced that Hamilton will be the home of a new digital service that will put all that the city, and the CBC, has to offer at Hamiltonians’ finger tips, commencing in spring of 2012.

“As we celebrate our 75th anniversary, we’re proud to be announcing the upcoming launch of our groundbreaking Hamilton service, establishing a new era in the way Canadians can connect with their community and each other,” says Kirstine Stewart, executive vice-president for English Services. “Just as CBC was an innovation leader in the earliest days of radio and television, we’re continuing to lead the way with this new service that will connect Hamiltonians to their neighbourhood, their city, their country and CBC whenever and wherever they are in a way no one else is doing in Canada.”

“We’ve wanted to be a part of Hamilton for many years,” says Jennifer McGuire, general manager and editor in chief of CBC News, with responsibility for CBC Centres.   “We’ve explored many options for how to best serve the community.  We’re happy that, beginning next spring, we’ll be establishing a digital CBC station that will put everything Hamilton has to offer in one place with news, information and conversations that matters most to Hamiltonians, right down to the street level”.

“This decision properly reflects our City’s place among great Canadian Cities. The CBC has been a building block of our country and the new presence in Hamilton will help us in the 21st Century renewal of our City,” says Hamilton Mayor Bob Bratina.

The new digital service will provide an up to the minute, as well as a “look ahead”, view, of local news, weather, events and other “need to know” information.  It will connect Hamiltonians to their community at large and it will all be accessible through smartphones, desktop/laptop computers and tablet devices.

“We’ve made tremendous progress in the execution of Everyone, Every Way, our strategic plan with the recent announcements of expanded, or new, local services across the country,” says Hubert T. Lacroix, president and chief executive officer of CBC/Radio-Canada. “This new digital service for Hamiltonians is a true reflection of our promise to Canadians, of not only delivering vital news and community information where and when they want it, but strengthening their relationship with their community through the use of new technologies.”
