Rise and Ruin Goes to Open Beta

veil entertainmentTorontoVeil Entertainment and Spore Productions are pleased to announce the Open Beta of Rise & Ruin, an online, card-based, fantasy combat game ready to play through PC web browsers.spore productions

Rise & Ruin is an entirely new twist on the trading card game (TCG) genre. Players level up their own ideal avatar while assembling decks from an ever-growing pool of powerful attack, defense, magic, and specialty cards. Thrilling, cinematic 3D battles take place directly in a web browser allowing for fast and accessible game play.

“We’re excited to get the Open Beta launched,” says Geoffrey MacDougall, CEO of Veil Entertainment. Rise and Ruin“We’ve worked hard to build an experience that combines the best of our favourite genres to provide character-driven, fast-paced game play. The guys on our live team are also eager to start implementing the storyline and tournaments they’ve developed over the last several months.”

“Now that we’re in open beta the team can start to focus on polish, reacting to the player experience, and implementing new features, ” says Joe Wagner, R&R’s Community Manager. “It’s great to be live. Players can also join us every Friday at 7:30 EST for Friday Night Fights where organized chaos reigns.”

Rise & Ruin gives players the unrestrictive option to play for free, for as long as they wish, with opportunities to win additional cards through community events. Similar to other TCGs, players can purchase credits to acquire new cards and access additional perks and content within the game.

Rise & Ruin is produced through the financial support of Telefilm Canada, Administrator of The Canada New Media Fund, funded by the Department of Canadian Heritage, Government of Canada.

  • Digital media and information and communications technology.

The fund is designed to help innovative technology companies find the capital they need to grow in Ontario. It was announced by the province in March, 2009, in response to the current economic conditions and the reduction in investment capital available to emerging and high-growth companies.

Guidelines for investment are now available on the Ontario Capital Growth website.

“The Emerging Technologies Fund is one more step the Ontario government is taking to help ensure that innovative people and companies have access to the capital they need to continue growing their business and creating jobs in Ontario,” said Minister of Research and Innovation, John Milloy

QUICK FACTS

  • Eligible companies must have a significant corporate footprint in Ontario.
  • This initiative complements the $205-million (£112 million) Ontario Venture Capital Fund, a partnership between Ontario and leading corporate and institutional investors that is investing in venture capital and growth equity funds that support innovative, high-growth companies.

Copyright eConsultation and Video Game GPU Research

OrbyDon’t forget to give the Government your input on the Copyright Consultation process. The eConsultation web site has transcripts from the past Town Hall meetings held across the country, as well as areas for direct participation such as the site’s forum and the online submission centre which both give you an opportunity to respond to a few specific questions on copyright. You can also submit your own paper or report to on the site so that other people can view your work. The Education Medias web site also has important information for educators in regards to the new copyright process.

Meanwhile, Science Daily has reported that researchers in the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) and the Georgia Tech School of Electrical and Computer Engineering are developing programming tools to enable engineers in the defense industry to utilize the processing power of GPUs without having to learn the complicated programming language required to use them directly. These tools are designed to take advantage of videogame computer and console GPUs.

“As radar systems and other sensor systems get more complicated, the computational requirements are becoming a bottleneck,” said GTRI senior research engineer Daniel Campbell. “We are capitalizing on the ability of GPUs to process radar, infrared sensor and video data faster than a typical computer and at a much lower cost and power than a computing cluster.”

The Winner Is Chosen and Other News

We here at Village Gamer apologize for the rather abrupt end to this article, and the lack of news posted today.  Due to a family emergency, any pending news stories and articles will be posted a little later than usual.

OrbyVancouver – Yesterday afternoon we braved the heat and Vancouver traffic to make a quick stop at Radical Entertainment for our PROTOTYPE prize draw. Alright, so we have A/C in the little truck, but traffic in Vancouver is still awful. We will be very glad when the new Pitt River Bridge is completed, because when traffic is bumper to bumper over the Port Mann, the new Golden Ears Bridge is way faster and with a QuickPass, it’s also cheaper than creeping forward on Highway 1.

Dave Holding The Bag

Dave Holding The Bag

Anyway, on to the prize draw. We had many entries, but alas only one copy of PROTOTYPE to give away, so a winner had to be chosen. For those who don’t know, the answer to our question was “Deadly shape-shifting action.”

KellyDave2Radical President Kelly Zmak and Vice President, Technology Dave Fracchia conducted the draw. As expected, the moment was full of amusement and mockery as Dave was left holding the bag while Kelly drew the winner, and we are pleased to announce that J. Berg of Langley is the chosen one. Our thanks to Kelly and Dave for participating in our first give-away. We have other freebies planned
